According to DPS, 6,769 drugged driving incidents were recorded between 2012 and 2016. That increased to 15,133 incidents between 2017 and 2021, a 123% increase.

So far this year, the Odessa Police Department has investigated 3,122 crashes, 11 of those being fatal, and has had 551 DWI-related offenses.

The bigger picture, unfortunately, is bleak: In 2022, over 13,000 people were killed in alcohol-related crashes, and on average, 32 people die daily in such incidents, according to the CDC.

WHAT NEWSDAY FOUND. On Long Island, 24% of fatal crashes in 2023 had a "drug-involved driver." That proportion is higher than the state average, and it's 7 percentage points higher than in 2014.
