A judge in Illinois has dismissed a Trump administration lawsuit seeking to disrupt limits Chicago imposes on cooperation between federal immigration agents and local police.

The Justice Department claimed that Illinois’ leaders had been “minimally enforcing — and oftentimes affirmatively thwarting” federal investigations, resulting in “countless criminals being released into Chicago.

The Justice Department had sued the leaders of Illinois, Chicago and Cook County over policies that limit cooperation with federal immigration officials.

The Justice Department suit argued that the policies thwarted enforcement efforts.
