A 4.5 magnitude earthquake and other smaller quakes rocked the Humboldt County coastline in Northern California on Feb. 11 and 12. What's happening?

In addition to the five quakes that have struck in the past 24 hours in California, several also struck offshore northwest of Petrolia, California.

All three earthquakes were reported within the same general area north of Malibu where a magnitude 4.7 temblor had hit four days earlier.

In the North American continent, only Alaska experiences more earthquakes per year than California. The California Earthquake Authority reports that over 500 active faults crisscross the state.
