The Padres are taking a chance on a high school left-hander with upside -- which probably should not come as a surprise. With the 25th overall pick in the MLB Draft on Sunday, San Diego selected 6-foot-8 left-hander Kruz Schoolcraft out of Sunset High School in Portland,

The San Diego Padres stayed in character Sunday, using their top selection in the MLB Draft on a high school player for a ninth consecutive year. This time, with the 25th pick, they settled on 6-foot-8 left-hander Kruz Schoolcraft.

Assuming he signs, Schoolcraft gives the Padres three young, high-ceiling lefties in the system. Kash Mayfield and Boston Bateman were drafted with the Padres’ first two picks last year. Both are now in the rotation at low Single-A Lake Elsinore.
